South Asian, Desi, & Indian Women’s Therapy

When I look at the above photo of women in sarees, I think about how each has her personal story of being a daughter, mother, wife, sister, girl coming of age, woman turning into wise woman. To think that these very pieces of fabric are passed down to daughters, along with their stories is wild. Just like this, you have your own story, your own fabric you are weaving together, to create your own sari, your own story! It would be an honor to support you on your exploration & creation of your story, your life!
For us South Asian, Desi, & Indian women, therapy, healing, & growth is very unique. In that there are many barriers to just get ourselves some support. We grew up hearing our parents say, “don’t tell outsiders our family problems, what would people say?…”loghe kya kehenge?”and to just get over our burdens because we are in America, the land of "opportunity'....ironically, as many of our fathers would then mask all their vulnerabilities while our mothers would emotionally unload onto us.
As a result, we've learned to adapt and become independent, but also doing everything by ourselves. There are so many women who've told me that they need support but are uncertain if they need therapy or feel unworthy of receiving support. Many finally get themselves to therapy, only to find a lack of Desi therapists and having to explain culture gaps to western therapists! I've been there, I get it and I just want to say YES, you deserve all the support, love, and safety! You don't have to embark on your journey alone anymore! I'm so glad that you are here!
