SACRED DANCE THERAPY
While dance is mostly associated to entertainment in modern society, sacred dance has its origins in fertility & childbirth rituals, spiritual & religious ceremonies, rites of passages, and healing practices. Sacred dances was considered a way of life for many across cultures. It is very likely that all our ancestors danced their way of life on earth. That is why community, music, cozy bonfires, & celebrations all strike a deep sense of familiarity within us.
Today, In this fast paced patriarchal world, many of us feel disconnected from our lives, ourselves, & our bodies. It is an honor to offer my ancestral gifts of sacred dances from India to the Near East in support of your empowerment & awakening of your shakti!
BELLY DANCE (RAQS SHARQI)
By moving the womb through Belly Dance, or Raqs Sharqi, we can release trauma through a somatic & dance movement therapy approach. The womb is energetically a placeholder of our emotional wounds which may physically manifest as reproductive, hormonal, & menstrual issues. The womb is also however, an energetic storage of our creativity, and ability to not only create life, but create the lives we desire!
INDIAN CLASSICAL DANCE
I further guide you in your expression through goddess poses of Indian Classical Dances such as Bharatanatyam, Kathak, & Odissi so that you can truly embody what you desire. Whether it’s goddess Lakshmi’s abundance or goddess Kali’s fiery & courageous nature, these goddesses reflect aspects of ourselves. Not just think or say it but actually feel and be it.
But “What if I’m Not A Dancer” You Say?
You don’t have to be a “dancer'“ or have dance experience to take part in dance therapy. Dance therapy is for everyone and just as you are. Perhaps you are drawn to dance but have hesitations because you don’t consider yourself a “dancer”, or, let’s face it, dancing can be vulnerable! This natural hesitation is common for many I’ve worked with, myself included and I’ve been dancing all my life! With me, you have the power to decide your pace and when you want to explore dance. Dance & movement can be as simple as tapping your feet. In our work together, everything is an invitation.
Dance Therapy Is NOT Dance Technique
Dance therapy is not about perfecting a dance move, but more about dancing for you. Dance to reconnect to your body & yourself. Tap into the power of dance to assist you on your journey of reclaiming your power. In our work, you define what dance is for you!
Will we be only dancing in therapy?
Of course not! As a psychotherapist, my training is in traditional talk therapy just like other therapists. Think of sacred dance therapy as just another tool in our therapy space together that can be explored in moments when you need and want to at your own pace. Everything we do is always an invitation.
Challenging what dance is supposed to be & decolonizing sacred dances
For most humans, signs of life were movement in the womb. In other words, dance & movement is a natural state of being for us. There’s nothing wrong with dance performance, I find it quite liberating as a dance performer too, but society & colonization has mostly made dance & movement JUST a performance. Similar to how the act of sex is often seen as a performance as well, you can read more about sacred sexuality in my blog. Through the metaphor of dance, we can begin to let go of the need to perform in not just dance or sex but even in our interactions with people & just about every aspect of life.
A change in perspective about what dance & movement means to you can not only be a path to reclaiming your shakti but a simultaneous venture in decolonizing lineages of sacred dance and bringing back its truth.
