How Belly Dance Therapy Empowers Women?
What is evoked within you seeing women move their hips, wombs & bodies in sensuality? While this may evoke curiosity, creativity & passion for some, many react in discomfort, awkwardness, judgement, & shame. Others feel a deep sense of sadness & longing for community, cultural & ancestral connection...Regardless whether or not you consider yourself a dancer, what you experience is a reflection of your own journey to your sensuality, sexuality, femininity, body, vulnerability, & culturality.
In a way we are all dancers in that the very first sign of life was movement in the womb! This is belly dance, the dance of the womb, the dance of life, the dance of the woman & girls coming of age. However in modern society, us women have become disconnected from our feminine power, our shakti.
REASONS WHY BELLYDANCE IS DIFFERENT FROM OTHERS & WHY EVERY WOMEN SHOULD BELLYDANCE
Belly dance is one of the oldest dances originating from the Romani gypsy dancers of India who travelled throughout eastern Europe into Egypt. It was created by women for women's purposes from first menses & becoming a woman, expressing fertility & sexuality, to aiding in pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, infertility, and to even reconnect to the feminine cycles.
After the strike of colonization & patriarchy, the healing power of belly dance was degraded into simply a dance of entertainment for men. Every modern woman who has experienced patriarchy, sexual trauma or discrimination, colonization & identity confusion, to all the physical, emotional experiences that come with having a womb, belly dance can be a way for women to reclaim her power once again.
